TRENTON Technology Introduces Two New PICMG® 1.3 Backplanes

New Trenton PICMG 1.3 Backplanes Support PCI ExpressTM, PCI-X and PCI Option Cards

Atlanta, GA – PICMG® 1.3 or SHB ExpressTM is the industry standard that defines a high-speed PCI ExpressTM interface methodology between the system host board (SHB) and the backplane. Trenton is pleased to announce the availability of two new PICMG 1.3 backplanes that support SHB Express system host boards and a variety of PCI Express (PCIe), PCI-X and PCI option cards. Trenton’s new BPG6600 backplane supports graphics-class slot configurations, and the BPX6620 operates as server-class backplane.

“Graphics-glass PICMG 1.3 backplanes feature one x16 PCI Express link to accommodate a high-end video or graphics card slot plus a combination of either one x4 or multiple x1 PCI Express links to drive the backplanes’ other PCIe devices or card slots,” explained Jim Renehan, Director of Marketing at Trenton. “Server-class backplanes offer a combination of x8 and x4 PCIe links that support multiple high-bandwidth PCI Express card slots and devices.”

Trenton’s SHB Express backplane configurations are available to support additional PCI-X and PCI card slots. Trenton’s PICMG 1.3 compatible backplanes have all of the power supply connections, including +12V AUX, on the backplane for increased reliability and faster Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). All Trenton backplanes are engineered to ensure that controlled impedance conditions exist regardless of the application’s option card loading requirements. The slot configurations of Trenton’s BPG6600 and BPX6620 backplanes are as follows:

BPG6600 – Graphics-class PCI Express Backplane
The BPG6600 has two PCI Express, two 64-bit/100MHz PCI-X, four 64-bit/66MHz PCI-X and four 32-bit/33MHz PCI option card slots. The backplane supports one System Host Board and one PCIe expansion slot. This 14-slot form factor backplane is optimized to support a graphics-class PICMG 1.3 system host board. The backplane’s x16 PCIe slot is also driven by a x16 PCI Express electrical link from a graphics-class SHB to maximize the application performance of high-end PCI Express graphics and video cards. The x4 PCIe option card slot connects to the PCIe expansion slot and is tied into the SHB via an additional x1 PCIe electrical link provided by Trenton’s IOB31 I/O Expansion Board.

BPX6620 – Server-class PCI Express Backplane
The 14-slot form factor of Trenton’s BPX6620 backplane is designed for applications with a large number of PCI-X and universal PCI option cards. The BPX6620 backplane supports a server-class PICMG 1.3 system host board and has one x8 and one x4 PCI Express card slot. A total of ten PCI-X card slots are featured that also support universal PCI option cards. The SHB provides three x4 PCI Express links, each of which drives a PCI Express-to-Dual Channel PCI-X bridge chip. One bridge chip supports two 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X channels to support the two 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X card slots. The remaining two bridge chips provide a total of four 64-bit/66MHZ PCI-X channels that support eight 64-bit/66MHz PCI-X option card slots.
