TRENTON Technology Expands SHB Express™ Backplane Family

Trenton Adds Five New SHB Express Backplanes Featuring PCI Express™

Atlanta, GA - SHB Express™ is the new PICMG® 1.3 industry standard that defines a high-speed PCI Express™ interface methodology between the system host board (SHB) and the backplane. Trenton is pleased to announce the availability of five new PICMG 1.3 backplanes that support SHB Express system host boards and a variety of PCI Express (PCIe), PCI-X and PCI option cards. Trenton's new BPG4 and BPG2/2 backplanes support graphics-class slot configurations, and the BPX5, BPX3/2 and BPX6571 operate as server-class backplanes.

"Graphics-glass PICMG 1.3 backplanes feature one x16 PCI Express link to accommodate a high-end video or graphics card slot plus a combination of either one x4 or multiple x1 PCI Express links to drive the backplanes' other PCIe devices or card slots," explained Jim Renehan, Director of Marketing at Trenton. "Server-class backplanes offer a combination of x8 and x4 PCIe links that support multiple high-bandwidth PCI Express card slots and devices."

Trenton's SHB Express backplane configurations are available to support additional PCI-X and PCI card slots. Trenton's PICMG 1.3 compatible backplanes have all of the power supply connections, including +12V AUX, on the backplane for increased reliability and faster Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). All Trenton backplanes are engineered to ensure that controlled impedance conditions exist regardless of the application's option card loading requirements. The slot configurations of Trenton's BPG4 and BPG2/2, BPX5, BPX3/2 and BPX6571 backplanes are as follows:

BPG4 - Small Form Factor PCI Express Backplane (Graphics-class)
The BPG4 has a total of five slots and is designed to fit into a small chassis. The SHB slot is optimized for a graphic-class PICMG 1.3 system host board. One x16 PCI Express slot is featured on the BPG4 backplane along with a x4 PCIe option card slot. An additional x1 PCIe option card slot is made functional by using the backplane's PCI Express expansion slot and Trenton's IOB31 card.

BPG2/2 - Small Form Factor PCI Express Backplane (Graphics-class)
The four card slots on the BPG2/2 backplane support a PICMG 1.3 system host board, one x16 PCI Express card and two 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X cards. The x16 PCIe link can also support x8, x4 and x1 PCI Express cards; the two PCI-X slots can support all 64-bit, universal PCI-X or PCI option cards.

BPX5 - Small Form Factor PCI Express Backplane (Server-class)
The BPX5 has a total of six slots and has the same overall physical dimensions (5.25"W x 11.9"L or 13.34cm x 30.23cm) as Trenton's BPG4 backplane. The SHB slot is optimized for a server-class PICMG 1.3 system host board. One x4 and two x8 PCI Express slots are featured on the BPX5 backplane. An additional x4 PCIe option card slot is made functional by using the backplane's PCI Express expansion slot and Trenton's IOB31 card.

BPX3/2 - Small Form Factor PCI Express Backplane (Server-class)
The five card slots on the BPG3/2 backplane support a PICMG 1.3 system host board, two x8 PCI Express cards and two 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X cards. The x8 PCIe links can also support x4 and x1 PCI Express cards; the two PCI-X slots can support all 64-bit, universal PCI-X or PCI option cards. The BPX3/2 is the same size as the BPG2/2 at 4.19"W x 11.9"L or 10.65cm x 30.23cm.

BPX6571 - Server-class PCI Express Backplane
The 19-slot form factor of Trenton's BPX6571 backplane is designed for applications with a large number of PCI-X and universal PCI option cards. The BPX6571 backplane supports a PICMG 1.3 system host board and has one x8 and one x4 PCI Express card slot. A total of sixteen 64-bit/66 PCI-X card slots are featured that also support universal PCI option cards. The SHB provides two x4 PCI Express links, each of which drives a PCI Express-to-Dual Channel PCI-X bridge chip. Each bridge chip provides two 64-bit/66 PCI-X channels to support the PCI-X option card slots.
